The market for technical textiles is expected to grow faster than its current level during the next five years.

Inaugurating a two-day conference on “Industrial Textiles – Products, Applications, and Prospects” organized by the PSG College of Technology and the Office of the Textile Commissioner here on Friday, Sujit Gulati, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, said the market for technical textiles was about Rs. 57,000 crore now. The current annual growth of 11 per cent was expected to increase to 20 per cent during the next five years.

Industrial textiles, which were part of technical textiles, had grown at almost 12 per cent this year. Nearly 34 per cent of industrial textile production was exported. The exporting industrial textile units were located mainly in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

The Ministry of Textiles had identified eight key ministries that could be major buyers of technical textile products.

About 20 small and medium-scale units had registered with the Office of the Textile Commissioner to set up technical textile projects. Some had started production too. Most of these were geo, agro, and packing technology units. Standards were also being evolved for technical textile products. Maximum standards had come out for medical textiles, he said.

Textile Commissioner A.B. Joshi said that the market for technical textiles, which had 12 major sub-segments, was expected to reach Rs. 1.58 lakh crore by 2016-17.( From Blogger to Mr.A.B.Joshi,Sir what is NTC's production of Technical Textiles in the years 2000 to 2011 product Name-wise.I will be pleased to see your comment. )

Industrial textiles had diverse applications such as conveyor belts and filtration products and were gaining acceptability in the domestic market.

The market size of industrial textiles now was nearly Rs. 5,000 crore. It was expected to more than double by 2016-17. It was an SME oriented sector.

In an effort to promote technical textiles, the Ministry of Textiles came out with a Scheme for Growth and Development of Technical Textiles and Technology Mission on Technical Textiles.

Four Centres of Excellence were established for agro tech, protech, geotech and meditech and four more were coming up for nonwovens, composites, industrial textiles and sports textiles.

The one for industrial textiles was established here in collaboration with PSG College of Technology. It provided facilities for incubation of new projects, and research.

Sanjay Chatrath, vice-president of SRF Ltd and Mohan Kavrie, managing director of Supreme Nonwovens, said that technical textiles were a knowledge-based industry and there was a growing market for it in India. Now the country was largely dependent on other countries for technology.

Research and interactions among the stakeholders would give a boost to indigenous technology development for the sector.

L. Gopalakrishnan, managing trustee of PSG Institutions, said the institute had started B. Tech in industrial textiles jointly with Hof University of Applied Sciences.
