Bangalore:

IISc Researchers have recently found in a study that surface modifications made to the nanosheets of a certain two-diensiosional inorganic compound can make them highly effective for delivering drugs to diseased cells. The compound molybdenum disulfphied or 2DS2 is composed of molybdenum and sulphur.

Researchers at the departent of organic chemistry and materials research centre have also found that these chemically modified nanosheets were also found to be safe to use inside living cells .They modified the surface of 2D-MoS2 nanosheets with thoil (sulpher containng) ligands. Thiolligands are certain componds with an ability to bindthemselves to metal atoms. "Our study shows that thiol exchange on 2D-MoS2 nanosheets is effective, and nano material is stable in the presence of various biomolicules. This is an important observation as it will make this nanomaterial highly benificial for biomedical applications like drug delivery" explains Marinmoy De,associate professor at the Department of organic Chemistry and senior author of the study published in ACS Nano.
