Use of coir geo-textiles in roads may be made mandatory.
Kochi (PTI): The Centre was contemplating making the use of coir geotextiles mandatory in the rural roads programme in order to give a huge boost to coir products, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jairam Ramesh on Friday said.
"In the next few years, I see coir not as a sunset industry, but as a sunrise industry," he said after inaugurating India International Coir Fair 2007 here.
"People write off coir as a traditional industry, but I see coir as a modern industry. The one single use of coir in India that will revolutionalise the coir industry is the use of coir geo-textiles,' he said.
Ramesh asked the Coir Board and the private sector to take as a challenge use of coir geo-textiles particularly in the construction of rural roads and highways. It would add value not just to the coir industry, but also ehance the quality of the roads in the country, the Minister said. Regional.
