Every year the American Textile Co. tries to come up with new products to make sleeping even better.
Next week it is up for a top award for it.
The textiles industry newspaper "Home Textiles Today" has named the company's new line of pillow, mattress and box springs protectors as one of three finalists in its "most innovative, trend right" category.
The reason for the designation for the new Allerease bedding covers is they are made with a new fabric called DuPont Hybrid Membrane Technology, which has three layers of fabric with the center layer being an extremely tightly woven fabric that filters air at a 1 micron level.
The weave, in other words, is so tight that it is 1/50 the width of a human hair and tight enough to filter out dust mites, pollen, mold, fungal spores and pet dander.
Jennifer Katz, the senior product manager for Duquesne-based American Textile Co., said the difference between these allergy barriers and others is that others are made of vinyl so they don't breathe.
The new Allerease products, which will be in stores this summer, have three layers of material: cotton, the finely woven filtration layer and then a nylon backing.
The company's other Allerease product, which is waterproof, is a vinyl material.
Ms. Katz said the new products would sell for $14.99 to $19.99.
